Read the bar mark before comparing material

Reinforcing-bar markings help trace the material from the mill to the fabrication shop and jobsite. CRSI explains that a bar is typically marked to identify the producing mill, bar size, type of reinforcing steel, and grade. This is useful for verifying material identity against the project documents; it is not a method for choosing the reinforcement design yourself.

Material identification is not reinforcement design

A grade mark is one part of the material specification. The engineer-of-record or responsible design professional determines bar size, grade, spacing, cover, laps, hooks, placement, corrosion protection, and any weldability requirements from the loads, concrete member, exposure, code, and project documents. Do not substitute a supplier comparison or calculator result for that design process.

Compare the released drawings, bar list, project specification, approved submittals, fabrication requirements, delivery lengths, coating requirements, and supplier documentation. A manufacturer’s website can describe its own product range, but it cannot replace the job-specific review of material certificates and fabrication details.
