Identify the footing shape first
A continuous wall footing is usually estimated as a long rectangular prism: footing length × footing width × footing thickness. Isolated pad footings use the same approach for each pad, then multiply by the number of identical footings. Complex stepped or sloped footings should be broken into simple sections.
Before entering numbers, confirm whether the plan dimensions describe the concrete itself or the excavation. Excavation volume and concrete volume are related but not interchangeable quantities.
Keep width, thickness, and length in one unit
Metric projects may use meters, centimeters, or millimeters, while North American residential work often uses feet and inches. Convert the measurements before multiplying. For example, a thickness entered in inches must be converted to feet if length and width are entered in feet.
